Flying from London to Lyon: tips and information for your trip

Your flight from London to Lyon will be swift and comfortable, so you have the time and the relaxed state of mind to start exploring the beautiful French city. Be prepared to be charmed by the city on the confluence of the Rhône and Saône Rivers. Lyon had been built by the Romans in 18 BC as the administrative and religious centre of their province Gallia Lugdunensis. They named it Lugdunum in honour of the Celtic god Lugus.

      Fun between the Rivers

The Romans were into big buildings, and for a province capital they pulled all the stops. You can still visit the Odeon, a covered building used for musical performances and reading public and built in the times of Emperor Hadrian. The impressive Roman theatre is still in use for some live events, especially during the theatre, music, and dance festival called Nuits de Fourvière. Theatre and Odeon are located at the foot of the Fourvière hill, therefore the name of the festival. If you go up there you will find a great point for getting an overview over the city. The cathedral Notre-Dame de Fourvière and the Tour métallique, a copy of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, are on top of the hill.

Bon Appetit! Haute Cuisine in Lyon

Walk through the beautiful old town of Lyon, enjoy the Renaissance buildings and narrow little alleys. Find out about the secret passages between little alleyways, called Traboules. You can join a guided tour through the old alleys. Have a coffee on the Place des Terreaux with the Lyon City Hall, St. Peter's Palace and the Bartholdi fountain. The famous silk production of Lyon took place in the quarter of Croix-Rousse, today it is a lively quarter with boutiques, craft shops and restaurants. Lyon is considered the capital of Haute Cuisine, the art of fine cooking. With two rivers to fish in, the Alps nearby and the Mediterranean a short way down the Rhône, the location was perfect to acquire a great variety of food. The long tradition was started hundreds of years ago by the „Mothers of Lyon“. They cooked in guild houses for the journeymen who travelled from town to town. Even the world famous chef Paul Bocuse had learned his craft from one of the „Mères Lyonnaises“. Enjoy the culinary highlights of Lyon with a glass of Beaujolais or Côtes du Rhône, but don’t miss your flight home.
