Flying from London to Luqa - Malta: tips and information for your trip

Your flight to Malta will bring you into the vicinity of the island's capital, Valletta. This astonishingly beautiful city is built nearly entirely in baroque style, all built while the Knights Hospitaller were the masters of Malta. They ruled the strategically important island for 250 years and were therefore later renamed “Order of Malta”. The historic centre of Valletta is part of the UNESCO World Heritage. The Sacra Infermeria in Valletta was the first hospital in Europe, run by the Order of Malta. If you are interested in history, you will find to your delight that this is just one highlight of over 7000 years of settlement on Malta. On Malta's little neighbour island Gozo, there is the oldest free-standing building in the world, the Ġgantija Temple.

Small island with big history

After the peaceful builders of the temple many new rulers came and went and added to the unique culture of Malta. The Phoenicians used Malta as a trading outpost in their Mediterranean Network and called it “Malet”, which means shelter. There is another theory that says that Malta comes from the Latin word for honey, “melita”. After the Romans had won their war against the Phoenicians of Carthage, they ruled the island and produced honey in large quantities. Even today the honey of Malta is famous for its rich flavour, which makes it a perfect souvenir or present for the people back home. After the long Roman period, the Vandals, Normans, Moors and Spaniards left their various traces in Malta's language, architecture and cuisine. The Order of Malta took over in 1530 until 1798.

Making the most of Malta

Of course you can spend a great holiday at the beach in Malta, you can learn scuba diving or you can swim with dolphins. The Blue Grotto, located on the southern coast of Malta, is a cave system that you can only explore by boat. Another uniquely Maltese affair is the food; you can see influences from Italy, North Africa and many other sources. Try the Maltese version of Ratatouille, which is called kapunata. Fenech is a rabbit stewed in red wine. Fish is a main ingredient, especially the gilthead is the most typical fish of Malta. It is served grilled, marinated and even as a pie, called Lampuki Pie. Whatever you expect from Mediterranean holidays, Malta will deliver.
