Flying to Seville: tips and information for your trip

Enjoy your flight to Seville, the centre of the Andalusia and a paradise for friends of historic landmarks. Like many other Spanish cities Seville dates to the 8th century BC, when Phoenician traders were setting up trading posts outside the Mediterranean on the Atlantic coast. It is about 80 km up the river Guadalquivir from the sea, and even today like through all the centuries it is a busy river port.

Making the most of Seville

For centuries, Seville was central to the Al Andaluz caliphate of the Moors in Spain. The most famous landmark of Seville is the Alcázar, “Royal House” in English, and parts of this astounding palace is still used by the royal family. From its original beginning as a fortress it developed into the typical garden palace the Moors loved. Even after the Reconquista, the Christian Kings kept the Moorish style when they added new buildings. Near to the Alcázar is the equally famous Cathedral of St. Mary, built on the site of the former mosque of Seville. Some elements like columns were recycled, the Giralda, the bell tower, was originally a minaret. Inside the tower are ramps instead of steps, so you could ride a horse or a donkey to the top. The Golden Age of Seville started with the transatlantic trade, because Seville had the monopoly for the trade with the West Indies. Every ship loaded with exotic produce, gold and silver had to sail to Seville first. In the baroque General Archive of the Indies the history of this era is accessible.

Opera and Flamenco

During the heydays of Seville, it was widely recognized as one of the richest cities in Europe. The popular culture of the time was Opera, so Seville was background to Figaro, Don Giovanni, The Barber of Seville, Carmen and a hundred more. If you want to experience the cities high spirits, come here for the Feria de Abril, when the whole city dresses up in flamenco gear, when they start to sing and dance the Sevillanos, their traditional folksongs, and party for about a whole week. A tent city is erected and you can try the local specialties, especially great varieties of tapas, while roaming the festivities. Enjoy your stay in Seville!
