Bringing design to life

Authentic solutions that suit all passengers – standard products couldn’t be relied upon to meet this goal. Look over the shoulders of Luke Pearson and the Pearson Lloyd design team and learn more about change, choices – and five different seats.

“Master of Space and Time” – that was the title of the project with which Lufthansa and Pearson Lloyd developed a completely new Business Class and made travel even more individual. When the first ideas and sketches were developed, the focus was not only on trend observations and forecasts of future travel habits, but also on people and their individual needs. Right from the start, during the initial deliberations, some Lufthansa customers were personally involved in the development process.

In London, you will find out what the first prototypes became – and discover a Business Class that, with five individual seats, caters to the changing needs of passengers in a very individual way.

Creative hotspot in East London

Functional, beautiful, efficient and with people's needs in focus – this is the goal that the East-London-based design agency has set for all the products and spaces it designs. And that is exactly what Lufthansa wanted in this creative partnership: to ask new questions, to look at things from unusual perspectives, and to go into the smallest detail. The shared aim of finding authentic solutions that really suit passengers and Lufthansa is the basis for creating something great and uniquely new – such as a Business Class on the next level.

„It’s not just about a seat, it’s about an individual travel experience, a design for the future and, in particular, the needs of travelers in a changing world.“
Luke Pearson, Director, Pearson Lloyd

More than just a seat

Luke Pearson and his design team asked the right questions. They thought about who the future passenger might be and what the passenger really wants. The world will change even more and even faster in the future. This means that very different people will travel to the same place – with very different wishes and needs.

Business Class as a space purely for businesspeople with room for their work will no longer exist in the same way. People also travel for pleasure. Relaxation, fun and experiences are paramount. All these different requirements can only be met by a Business Class that caters to the individual needs of each passenger – and gives people maximum choice.

No compromises and the best possible travel experience for the passenger: Together, Pearson Lloyd and the Lufthansa Corporate Design Team led by Ronald Wild have designed every single seat and the entire cabin in such a way that passengers’ wishes are met, and everything fits exactly with the aircraft for which it is intended. In its design language and functionality, Lufthansa Allegris is individually tailored to each new long-haul aircraft – it’s currently on the A350, will soon be on the B787-9 and in future will also be on the B747-8 and B777-9.

„With Lufthansa Allegris, we pursued the goal of realizing every possible additional space gain for the comfort of our passengers – with the focus always on ergonomically relevant areas.“

Katja Gatersleben, Senior Manager Customer Experience Design, Lufthansa Group, is closely associated with the development of Lufthansa Allegris. She was in personal contact with Lufthansa customers at an early stage of the process. Among other things, she is responsible for ensuring that ergonomically important areas such as, for example, bed length, space in the footwell and in the upper body area when sleeping, as well as space for changing in the washroom, were further optimized and Lufthansa’s self-imposed high standards were exceeded.

Cocooning – facilitating privacy in a public space

A look at the new seats shows that they are not only positioned differently within the cabin. “All seats have the same high standard of functionality and ergonomic comfort. But in addition, the individual seats have further functional differences that make each seat perfect for a specific travel occasion or a specific travel situation,” says Katja Gatersleben. From the beginning, it was important to offer all seats additional privacy – while still remaining part of the cabin. For the first time, there are suites on board Business Class. Two single suites can easily be converted into a double suite, allowing passengers to travel undisturbed as a couple. On the Extra Space Seat, a spacious single seat, our passengers enjoy more space on their left and right. And in itself, the general seat construction in the ergonomic shell design already offers increased privacy for working or sleeping undisturbed.

The suites are the highlight of Lufthansa Allegris Business Class. Chest-high partitions and sliding doors offer even more comfort and privacy – and the single suites in the cabin interior can be transformed into a suite for two at the touch of a button.

Lufthansa Allegris Business Class – designed with foresight

More individual travel experiences. We want to offer our passengers the maximum flexibility. Five seat types can now be booked, depending on the desired travel experience. Whether passengers are traveling solo, as a couple, with colleagues, on business or for private reasons – the modular, multi-seat environment caters for almost all requirements.

Intelligent use of space. There is limited space in an aircraft. With Lufthansa Allegris, we have made maximum use of the area available and created more room for our passengers through small structural changes, for example in the washrooms. The result: more clever storage options, well-thought-out work and shelf areas, better ergonomics – as well as space for a particularly smart and easy-to-use in-flight entertainment system.

Sustainable design. We think and act long-term. The materials we have selected together with the design teams, and the technologies we have incorporated, are all designed to last. In the entire cabin design, too, every square centimeter was used wisely – with the passengers, the crew, and the technical teams in mind.
