Working together for more well-being

Some people like it warm and cozy. Others prefer it to be a little cooler. Temperature and comfort are very closely linked. In Switzerland, Meet the Makers met the people who have made it possible for you to find your own comfortable temperature above the clouds.

The work that Lufthansa and Caynova have achieved together is already pioneering: the world's first seat heating and cooling system for seats in a passenger aircraft. And with it the option of regulating the individual comfortable climate at your seat yourself – regardless of what is happening in the cabin. From the first "couldn't we ...?" idea through to the prototypes and the end product – experts met here over lively exchanges and forged ahead with the seat heating and cooling technology, including a new central control panel. The result: a First Class and Business Class in which passengers can control their well-being individually.

Swiss engineering skill

Well-being on board – that is the core competence of this young Swiss company. This competence and the targeted development, qualification and integration of reliable systems were crucial for the successful and collaborative partnership with Lufthansa. The shared aspiration and mutual trust were the best basis for creating something completely new, such as the seat heating and cooling system for Lufthansa Allegris.

What makes the seat heating and cooling system so special?

Thomas Steiner, Chief Executive Officer at Caynova AG, has achieved a great deal along with his team and Lufthansa and significantly increased well-being on board with a true innovation. The cooling and heating function consists of a combination of different technical layers. A heating mat with very thin wiring transmits heat to the passenger. On the other hand, a fan system provides a very efficient cooling effect and simultaneously removes moisture from the passenger's clothing. This ensures passengers feel fresh and relaxed when seated.

The highlight: all seat functions can be controlled centrally from a dedicated tablet. Using the intuitive touch display, all First and Business Class passengers can find their comfortable temperature and adjust it individually – independently of the cabin environment. Incidentally, many other functions can also be controlled via the tablet.

Well-being above the clouds

The crew – the people who, as hosts, are there for all passengers – clearly make by far the greatest contribution to a successful flight experience. But the seat is also crucial to an enjoyable flight. Your own seat is your private space during the flight – a sort of personal protected zone. With Allegris, Lufthansa is raising the bar very high and setting a new standard for First Class and Business Class. Passengers have full control over pretty much everything in their environment at their seats – and can create their own individual oasis of well-being.

Comfort at the first touch

The new seats are equipped with a variety of functions. Heating or cooling the seat, a personal fan, the angle of the backrest – everything can be easily adjusted via the touch display on the tablet. This also applies to the in-flight entertainment system – full control for a supremely comfortable long-haul flight.

Restful sleep

Do you like sleeping on your side? Then you surely know the problem. The thin foam padding often makes it impossible to find a comfortable sleeping position. Your spine is put under a lot of strain and sleep is not restful.

With Lufthansa Allegris, the seats in First Class and Business Class have a side-sleeping function. This function lets your shoulders sink in properly and keeps your spine straight. And that means a tremendous increase in comfort for all side sleepers.

Fighting jet lag with light

Long-haul flights and jet lag – for many travelers, they simply belong together. Our biological clock gets quite disrupted when flying across several time zones. Tiredness, dizziness, and headaches are some of the unpleasant symptoms. Customized lighting during the flight can counteract this. The Hamburg-based start-up, jetlite, has developed scientifically proven lighting technology to reduce jet lag. This chronobiologically effective lighting is also used on Lufthansa Allegris flights.

"Although jet lag cannot be completely prevented, it can be greatly reduced with a chronobiological lighting concept on board."

Light from Hamburg

The jetlite algorithm, developed in Hamburg, controls the cabin lighting according to the flight time, duration, and direction as well as the time zones, daylight and seasons at the departure and destination locations. Over 24 different lighting scenarios can be created that have a positive effect on the passengers' biorhythms. The technology used is based on studies in the fields of chronobiology and human-centric lighting and helps passengers to choose their optimal sleeping times.
