What should I be aware of when flying with children?
It’s great that you are planning to take your next flight with your child. We’d like to give you a few important tips and suggestions about how best to prepare for your time on board with us.
Important information about flying with children
- Babies (under 2 years of age) can travel on the lap of an accompanying adult. In this instance, flight attendants will give the adult a safety belt for the baby before take-off. The baby can also travel on a separate seat; it must then be secured by a child restraint system that the adult must bring on board with them.
- Pack a little something to eat for the journey. We do, of course, provide snacks for our small passengers on board our aircraft, but nothing can replace a favourite sweet or nibble.
- The differing temperature conditions at your departure airport, on board (air conditioning) and at your destination can best be dealt with by creating a so-called “onion oufit”: dress your child in several layers of clothing that can then be taken off or put back on as required.
- Don’t forget thick socks. As your children’s feet might swell a little at high altitude, we recommend that you remove their shoes on board.
- Meals that are suitable for children (aged 2 and over) can be ordered separately when you book your flight.
Can I take my pushchair on the aircraft?
Folding pushchairs need not necessarily be checked in as baggage; at most airports, such as at Frankfurt and Munich for example, they can be used right up to the aircraft door. One of our employees will take the pushchair from you before you board the aircraft and return it to you after landing. Please ask our ground crew at baggage drop-off whether you can take the pushchair with you to the aircraft.
Can I fly if my child has a cold?
If your child has a cold, give him or her nose drops to help equalise the air pressure. Ideally, apply these half an hour before departure and after landing.

How can I occupy my children during the flight?
Keeping our young passengers entertained is important to us; that is why there is also an extensive entertainment programme for children and babies on board Lufthansa flights. The crew hands out super children's toys, such as colouring books and puzzles, to our youngest passengers.
The in-flight entertainment programme includes entertainment especially for children. Among the selection you can find specially selected documentaries, children's films, radio plays and lots more. As a parent, you also have the option of blocking your children’s viewing of all other channels (the parental lock function – please speak to the crew about this). You can read more about the in-flight entertainment programme, including for older children and teenagers here. Another highlight: on a number of long-haul aircraft (as well as some Airbus A330s and on all A380s and B747-8is), children can observe the aircraft up close from the pilot’s viewpoint during take-off and landing via external cameras.
If children are on their first flight with Lufthansa, they will receive our Lufthansa logbook on board to collect and record their flights. When the logbook is full, they will receive a fantastic pilot's certificate. Children will find all the information about the logbook on the following page:
