In My Hood: Out and About in Schaumburg, Chicago

Roger Sharpe is a pinball icon: in 1976 he helped to legalize the game again. The reward? A Hollywood movie. Here he reveals why he loves playing in Schaumburg - and what else he likes to do in this neighborhood

The Schaumburg neighborhood is probably not the first sightseeing stop on most Chicago travellers' list. But if you love pinball, you should definitely plan a visit. Schaumburg is home to one of the largest shopping centers in the US: Woodfield Mall with roughly 300 shops.

The reason I come here regularly is Enterrium, an entertainment hub with bowling alleys, countless arcade games – such as "Space Invaders" or "Pac-Man" and a room with 36 pinball machines. Included are classics such as "The Addams Family" and also very rare machines that can't be found anywhere else.

Some of the most important pinball machine manufacturers come from Chicago, who set up their prototypes to test them. Large tournaments are also held here.

If the smell of popcorn suddenly wafts into your nose, it's probably from the Garrett Popcorn Shop. A Chicago institution for 75 years. Caramel Crisp is so crunchy and sticky! Another fun fact about Chicago: comedy is big here. Several stars of the scene earned their first laughs in the city. And with the Improv, Woodfield Mall also has its own first-class stand-up club.

If we want to go out for a meal with the whole family – including grandchildren – I book a table at Maggiano's Little Italy. A large Caesar salad is enough for two and the linguine with mussels is fantastic. The Legoland Discovery Centre is also nearby. There are rides, a cinema and of course lots of colourful blocks. My grandchildren love it! And I become a child again there too.

If it's only my wife, Ellen, and me, Perry's Steakhouse & Grille is one of our favorites. The ribs are carved directly at the table. Meat with potatoes – that's typical for Chicago as well.
