For the serious monument seeker the northern city of Veliko Tarnovo is a treasure trove of ancient architecture. It was the capital of the medieval Second Bulgarian Empire that successfully fought against the Byzantine Emperor. From the roman ruins of Nicopolis and Istrum to the beautiful Monastery of the Holy Transfiguration of God and the fortress of medieval Bulgarian Kings here is history in abundance.
If you are more into city trips, have a look at the capital Sofia in the mountainous area of western Bulgaria. It is named after its Patron Saint Sofia, who has the oldest church of the Town to her name, dating back to the 3rd century AD. There is also a gigantic Statue of St. Sofia in the center of the City. Another great monument is the old roman amphitheater of Serdica, the only one in all of the Roman Empire that combines theater and amphitheater. The excavated ruins are now inside a hotel and have been most interestingly incorporated into the hotels architecture. Of course Sofia has also a whole range of bars, clubs and restaurants for a night on the town, when the sightseeing is done.
