When Santa Barbara was conquered from the Moors in 1265, Alicante became a Christian town and the Moors had to leave. Until today there is the magnificent “Festival of Moors and Christians” to commemorate that event.
More insight into the long history of Alicante, which was settled by Greeks and Phoenicians in its early phases, can be seen in the Museum of Archeology. At the feet of the castle is the historic part of town, El Barrio. Here you can get lost in picturesque alleys and find many bars, restaurants and clubs.Try the local kitchen which is famous all over Spain and don’t forget to taste the great wines of the region. The colorful harbor promenade Explanada de España is the meeting point for the locals and makes its way along the harbor to the beach. It is paved with 6.5 Million little shards of colored marble. If you are seeking some shade, go to the park El Palmeral, where you can relax in the shadow of thousands of palm trees.
