Flying to Poland: tips and information for your trip
When holidays in Europe are planned, it is mostly about the south for the beach and the middle and west for the sightseeing. Now consider Poland: three hundred miles of sand beach at the Baltic Sea, historical monuments from more than a thousand years of history, breathtaking landscapes, beautiful cities and towns, even a mountain area with winter sports possibilities.
Start your exploration in Warsaw, biggest city and capital of Poland. It is a modern European city with contemporary architecture, but also a beautifully restored historic center. The market square is a good starting point to explore the city, the castle square is a good place to stay and be entertained by street artists. From Warsaw you may want to go to Poland’s second biggest city Lodz, with its restored Art Nouveau textile mills and the houses of their owners from the early industrial revolution. Don’t miss Krakow in the south of Poland, where the university Jagiellońska is central since the 15th century. Kopernikus worked here, and you can still see his instruments in a museum. Walk the historic Kings Way to see all important monuments of this hidden pearl of Poland. In the vicinity is the Wieliczka, the oldest salt mine in the world, where the workers have formed a whole chapel out of the salt, decorated with salt sculptures and salt chandeliers. Another southern city to visit is Wrocław/Breslau in Silesia.
But you wanted just a relaxing time at the beach, didn’t you? From the German border starts a long stretch of fine sand beach all along the coast. You will also find some of the biggest wandering dunes in Europe on the Polish coast. What you will find for sure all along the coast is amber, which was once traded from here to places as far away as Crete and Egypt, where the Pharaos considered the electric stones a magical device. The polish coast is well developed for tourism, so you will find your relaxing beach holiday as well as action, sports and fun for a family trip. Swimming and sailing are the main activities here, but you can also rent a bicycle and make a tour along the coast to Gdansk/Danzig. Here is another beautiful town full of medieval and renaissance architecture and a lot of history, including the very recent history. Forty miles southeast is the biggest brick castle of Europe, the Marienburg, where the Order of the Teutonic Knights had their headquarters in the 14th century. No less than five million bricks were needed for this masterpiece that even included central heating.
Don’t leave without having seen the most holy object of Poland, the Icon of the Black Madonna, in Częstochowa/Tschenstochau. On the eastern border with Belarus is the Białowieża National Park, where the last European bisons live in the last primeval forest of Europe. South of here is the Polish part of the High Tatra Mountains on the border to Slovakia, where skiing is possible in the winter, and hiking in the summer. The diversity of Poland with its many landscapes, cities and monuments will make you wish for more time to explore it all. Rest assured that a flight to Poland will always be available if you wish to go there again.
