Terms and conditions for advance seat reservations

Legal entitlement

Please note that a confirmed advance seat reservation does not represent a legal entitlement to a particular seat, but only the seat category selected, e.g. an aisle or window seat.

Economy Class

Extra legroom seats

In Economy Class, Lufthansa offers you the option of reserving an extra legroom seat on almost all types of aircraft. You can see the precise position of the seats on the seat maps. They feature at least ten centimetres of extra legroom.

Some of these seats are located in the emergency exit rows. Please note the following special conditions in such cases.

Seats in emergency exit rows

The following conditions apply to the reservation of seats in emergency exit rows:

  • You must be at least 16 years old.
  • You must be fluent in German or English.
  • You must be willing to offer help in the unlikely event of an emergency.
  • You must be capable of reading and understanding instructions and following the crew’s instructions in the event of an emergency.
  • You must be able to carry out the tasks you are instructed to perform without the help of a travelling companion, parent or other relative.
  • You must not be travelling with a person who would be dependent on your help in an emergency.
  • You must not have a condition or position of responsibility that would prevent you from carrying out these tasks or would lead to physical injury in so doing.
  • You must not be travelling with an animal in the cabin.

Lufthansa is entitled to assign a different seat before departure to passengers who cannot meet these requirements to guarantee safety.

Please also note that any hand luggage must be stowed in the overhead bins. Items must not be placed near or under the seats in an emergency exit row during take-off and landing.

Ticket changes and refunds for advance seat reservations

If you have an existing seat reservation, you can rebook or cancel your ticket easily and conveniently yourself via “My bookings”.

Please note that a confirmed seat reservation does not guarantee you a specific seat on board the aircraft (e.g. seat 3A). The seat reservation refers to the seat category (e.g. Classic Seat, Preferred Zone Seat, Extra Legroom Seat etc.).

A seat reservation applies to a single leg of your flight.

Please note that seat reservations are not refundable either at the airport or on board.

When you book a seat in an emergency row, you must be able to meet the legal requirements. These will be explained to you during the booking process. If you do not meet these requirements, you will be allocated a different seat and you are not entitled to a refund.

The following conditions apply to cancellations and refunds if your advance seat reservation is changed unexpectedly:

In the event of an operational change (e.g. a change to the aircraft type or travel route), we will try to rebook you in the same seat category you have previously booked. However, the seat number you chose previously may change. If we are unable to rebook you in the same seat category, your seat reservation is refundable.

Your seat reservation is also refundable if we cancel your flight.

The following conditions apply to cancellations and refunds if you make changes to your booking yourself:

Changing your seat reservation without changing your flight

If you have made a seat reservation for your flight and wish to change your seat, you can do so via “My bookings”. The following rules apply:

  • You can change to a lower seat category free of charge. The price difference is non-refundable but is retained in your reservation and can be used for a later rebooking to a higher seat category (e.g. back to your previous seat category, if available, or to a higher seat category).
  • You can rebook to a higher seat category by paying the price difference.

Changing your seat reservation and your flight

If you change your flight and the route remains the same, you can transfer your seat reservation to the new flight. If the original seat category is not available on the new flight,

  • you can rebook to a lower seat category free of charge. The price difference is non-refundable but is retained in your reservation and can be used for a subsequent rebooking to a higher seat category (e.g. to the seat category you originally booked, if this becomes available again).
  • You can rebook to a higher seat category and pay the price difference.

Should you also change the flight route, you may incur additional costs.

Refunds for your seat reservation without your flight being refunded

Seat reservations alone are not refunded. However, if you have purchased an upgrade to a higher travel class, the seat reservation you previously purchased is refundable. Free upgrades that are offered by us as a goodwill gesture or for operational reasons do not entitle you to a refund for your prior seat reservation.

Refunds for your seat reservation together with the cancellation and refund of your flight

Seat reservations are generally non-refundable, even when you cancel your flight. However, if the fare conditions allow, you can obtain a refund for your seat reservation together with a flight cancellation for Allegris Business Class and First Class seats.

Please note that if you only use part of your ticket, e.g. only BUD–FRA instead of BUD–FRA–NYC, the seat reservation is non-refundable.

Terms and conditions of sale for selecting seats at online check-in

Passengers have the option of choosing between various seat categories at different prices.

Passengers whose fare does not include a free seat reservation will be allocated a seat automatically during online check-in. Passengers have the option of changing the seat allocated to them at online check-in by booking the relevant seat category for a fee.

Passengers whose fare does include a free seat reservation, or passengers who have already booked a seat reservation, can change their existing seat within the same seat category free of charge subject to availability.

The conditions below must be met when changing a seat:

  • The passenger must check in online on a flight operated by Lufthansa, SWISS, Brussels Airlines or Austrian Airlines.
  • There must be seats available on the flight on which the passenger wishes to check in.
  • There must not be any operational reasons that prevent a change of seat.
  • The passenger must have a confirmed booking and have been accepted for online check-in (not passengers on a waiting list).
  • The passenger must check in online no later than 2 hours before departure.

General conditions

  • When purchasing a higher seat category, passengers can obtain a refund for the fee previously paid for a lower seat category via the Service Centre. The passenger must apply for the refund. The fee already paid cannot be offset against the new purchase.
  • The seat category fee is always payable for each segment of the route. The seat can be changed free of charge within the same or lower seat category.
  • The purchase of the seat category for a flight is non-refundable and is forfeit if the passenger does not commence the flight.
  • The purchase of a seat at online check-in is only for the seat category selected. The seat number within the respective seat category may be changed for operational reasons. In the event of an operational change, passengers can change the new seat allocation within the same seat category free of charge. No refunds are given.
  • Passengers can only pay by credit card.
