The price of the ticket includes the transportation of a certain amount of baggage in the cargo hold of the aircraft. This allowance differs depending on the booking class and the destination.

MSC (Most Significant Carrier) rule effective since 1 April 2011
Effective from 1 April 2011: if the geographically longest or most significant stretch of your journey is not operated by Lufthansa, but by another airline, this airline’s rules may also apply to Lufthansa flights or Lufthansa flight numbers.

If Lufthansa operates the geographically longest or most significant stretch of the journey, then the rules and charges effective since 15 November 2010 still apply.
Free baggage allowance on all routes where the weight concept applies before June 1st 2011
On all flight routes within Germany and within other European countries, as well as between Europe and other countries, including Germany, CIS, Middle East (except Cairo), Africa (except West-/East-/Central-Africa) and Asia (except Japan), your free baggage allowance is determined according to the 'Weight Concept'. With this concept the free baggage allowance is defined by total weight of your baggage, rather than by the number of bags.
The allowances are:
- First Class: 40 kg (88lb) - plus 1 ski bag and plus 1 golf bag
on flights operated by Lufthansa and Swiss International Airlines - Business Class: 30 kg (66lb) - plus 1 ski bag
on flights operated by Lufthansa and Swiss International Airlines - Economy Class: 20 kg (44lb) - plus 1 ski bag
on flights operated by Lufthansa and Swiss International Airlines
1 ski bag = 1 SKI SET = 1 pair of ski or snowboard or waterski + 1 pair of ski poles + 1 pair of ski boots

Free baggage allowance on long-haul flights where the piece concept applies for tickets issued between 15 November 2010 and 31 May 2011
The Piece Concept applies to many long haul flights. Economy Class passengers travelling between Europe incl. Yekaterinburg, India and the USA, Canada, Mexico, Australia and New Zealand (via USA / Canada) are allowed to check in one piece of luggage and one ski equipment in addition to their hand luggage free of charge.
In First and Business Class and other regions, up to two pieces of luggage can be checked in free of charge.
NEW: For Tickets issued from 15 March 2011 the Piece Concept also applies for flights from/to Japan
The permitted size, which is the total of the height, width and length, may not exceed 158cm. Please use the following table to calculate the permitted weight per piece of luggage:

Especially large and heavy pieces of baggage
If you exceed the free baggage allowance stated above our Excess baggage tariff applies.
When the Piece concept applies (see table), a baggage piece should not exceed the permitted dimensions of 158 cm (length + width + depth). Excess baggage fees will have to be paid if these dimensions are exceeded.
The weight of the individual piece of baggage may not exceed 45 kg. Different local restrictions may apply.
Local restrictions on baggage weight
Please note that the maximum weight limit per single piece of baggage is 45kg kg for all flights (outbound and return, as well as transfers).
To the destinations listed below, irrespective of class, the maximum weight per single piece of baggage is 32kg:
Abu Dhabi, Almaty, Amsterdam, Astana, Australia, Basel, Billund, Bari, Bruessels, Cape Town, Cyprus, Donetsk, Doha, Dubai, Dublin, Florence, France, Genoa, Johannesburg, Khartum, Kuala Lumpur, Kuwait, Luxembourg, Luanda, Malta, Muscat, New Zealand, Rostov, Saudi Arabia, Sofia, Spain, Turin, United Kingdom, Valencia, Verona
Bags which exceed these weights will not be accepted as checked baggage. You can have them sent by cargo and at cargo rates.
Maximum weights and conditions for free baggage allowance are not affected by this regulation.
Free baggage allowance for children
- Children aged two years and over are entitled to the same free baggage allowance as adults.
- Infants aged under two years have a free allowance of one bag plus a fully collapsible pushchair; under the 'Weight Concept' one bag with a maximum weight of 10 kg and under the 'Piece Concept' one bag with maximum weight of 23 kg.
- Child safety seats can be carried free of charge provided that the model is approved and the child is travelling on a child’s fare and in a booked seat.
For child seats that are not approved the usual free baggage allowance and excess baggage charges apply. - A seat must be booked for any child who will turn two years old during the journey. Please note that the date of the return flight is the determining factor for the age limit.
Transportation of pushchairs, wheelchairs or walking aids
At most stations you can keep your pushchair, baby buggy, wheelchair or other walking aid that you depend on until you board the aircraft.
A foldable pushchair or baby basket we transport free of charge. A pram will be transported in the cargo hold.
Disabled passengers can check in two wheelchairs or other mobility aids in addition to their free baggage allowance. For more information, please see our Advice on barrier-free travel.
The pram or wheelchair will be given to you, wherever possible, after disembarking the aircraft. Please beware that the place where the items are returned can vary depending on the location at your destination.

When entering the European Union, please note the regulations on importing products of animal origin for personal consumption, such as for example, meat and milk and products made from them.
