Register an animal for carriage in the cargo hold

You can take your dog or cat with you on your Lufthansa flight as excess baggage in special transport containers in the air-conditioned cargo hold. We’ll check availability and make the booking for you no later than 72 hours before departure. If booking your pet is not possible, we’ll inform you by email. If your booking is successful, you must pay the fees incurred at check-in at the airport.

Since 01.08.2024 new restrictions have been put in place by the United States national public health agency, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). As a result, the entry regulations for dogs into the USA are changing:

  • New bookings for dogs to the USA will only be accepted for the airports in Washington DC, New York-JFK, Atlanta, Miami, Los Angeles and Philadelphia.
  • Only dogs that are at least six months old will be accepted on trips to the USA.
  • In addition, please complete the CDC Dog Import Form.
  • You must present the confirmation from the U.S. authorities in digital or printed form when entering and departing the country.

Register cat or dog

We’ll check availability and book the carriage of your pet in the cargo hold as excess baggage for your next Lufthansa flight. If booking your pet is not possible, we’ll inform you by email. If your booking is successful, you must pay the fees incurred including transfers at check-in at the airport.

Conditions
  • New bookings for dogs to the USA with a flight date from 1 August are only accepted for the airports in Washington DC, New York-JFK, Atlanta, Miami, Los Angeles and Philadelphia.
  • Booking no later than 72 hours before departure (otherwise please contact the Service Center up to 24 hours before departure).
  • Available on flights operated by Lufthansa, exceptions may apply on Lufthansa code-share flights (e.g. no availability on flights operated by United Airlines).
  • No availability on travel with transit/transfer in Munich. This exception does not apply to direct flights from/to Munich.
  • Lufthansa Express Bus/Lufthansa Express Rail: carriage not possible.
  • Specific national restrictions (e.g. Australia, Bahrain, China, etc.) and exceptions for certain aircraft types may apply.
  • The minimum age of the animal from/to Germany is 15 weeks, in all other countries 12 weeks.
  • Since 01.08.2024 only dogs that are at least six months old have been accepted for travel to the USA.
  • Each animal must be able to move during its journey, as well as stand, lie down and turn around in its cage. If two animals are transported together in a single crate, they must be used to one another.
  • Only one animal is permitted per transport container. Exception: two animals of approximately the same size and each no heavier than 14 kg, or a mother animal with a young animal.
  • Your pet’s transport container must comply with IATA Live Animal Regulations.
